Many of the music projects I personally work on are recorded at my studio in Seattle. Creating this space where I am able to craft the musical pieces in which I play and perform, along with recording and producing all types of musical and audio clients, in many different formats, gives me tremendous satisfaction.
These formats include a variety of music artists and genres – acoustic, blues, jazz, funk and rock – who record solo, or with bands. Recently, it has been a lot of fun diversifying into recording audio books, student projects and school groups, and a series of guided imagery and hypnotherapy CDs.
The process of recording almost always starts with discussing and establishing expectations, determining the steps that will lead to achieving the final goal. Possibilities range from recording one instrument or creating full arrangements; recording a simple voice-over piece or scheduling multiple days of recording in different rooms, cities or environments. Providing as the needs arise, is a big part of this creative process. The challenge and interlacing of innovative ideas are at the heart of what gives me great personal and artistic gratification.
I love recording, arranging, and mixing music with artists and clients around the country and internationally. Distance and miles are no problem as technology provides the opportunity to produce and record folks across the state, country or literally anywhere on the planet. This is an amazing development that has become much easier in the last couple years. Artists send MP3 files, music stems (premixed groups of tracks usually by instrument type) and audio session files (complete protools audio sessions) to cut drums, the percussion that fills out and enhances the other instruments and vocals. The files are returned as separate tracks or mixed (finished) audio files.
In the process of creating this company with my business partner Valda Sarty, we recognized that the goal of Ben Smith Music Studio is to support and assist artists and clients, embracing imagination and inspiration in their work with a final result that exceeds their expectations!
