I have had some really fun days in my life, and some occurred recently with Ben Smith Music Company while on tour with Heart.
After a couple of very busy and stressful months, I asked my business partner, Valda Sarty, for help getting the word out about what we are doing in Ben Smith Music Company. She suggested we contact radio stations in the cities I would be performing and offer me for interviews.
She put together a plan of contacting the stations along the tour route with a friendly letter offering Ben on a platter for interviews. She attached a mini press kit including a press release about the Heart show in their area, and a ditty (bio) about me, and an introduction to Ben Smith Music Company. Lo and behold the responses of interest started coming in and the plan started working.
I’ve done four radio interviews in the last 7 days or so, and it’s been a blast. Turns out folks are interested to hear my story, and they want to hear it from me! They want to know what I’m up to, what Heart is doing, and what Ben Smith Music Company is all about. The radio people then introduced me to other music business folks who had great ideas about how we could collaborate. What an incredible outcome!
Believing it’s possible for us artists and dreamers to get the word out about our work and dreams is so important. Making a place in the world is dependent on believing we have something of value to offer. For most musical artists, it’s our music however we shouldn’t forget that Our Story makes a real and important statement too! Where we’ve come from, who we consider our heroes, and what we have to share with the music community and the world are all valid expressions of ourselves.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned recently while putting Ben Smith Music Company into action is that people want to hear Our Story. They want to know what’s possible, and to hear the passion and love of what we do expressed in the public sphere.
If you have something to offer, find a way to put your story out there so folks can hear it! If you are stuck, ask for help, and if you are willing to reach out, amazing things can happen.
I believe, and have experienced, that the bigger world wants to know about what we are doing, and we can use that belief to reach out to those who share our passions and want to help us tell our story.
If you believe Ben Smith Music Company can help with your music, business and career, we’d love to hear from you!
